  • Tesua Muakitangata Unbelievable! When converted, these are equivalent to NZ prices for these products, and people are expected to pay for these basic food with Solomon Islands wages and salaries. What is so wrong with our economy? It's not sustainable, and the Government needs to intervene and do something about the ridiculous situation people face daily.

  • Li Kris for a grass root person the price is fairly reasonable since the cost of leaving in Honiara is really expensive. Go into a chinese shop and see the price for a kids slipper which is sbd15.00 which could have been SBD5.00. I can only feel for the poor fellow who was selling the mango at the market.

  • Li Kris if the person who was selling the Mango @ $10.00 only sold on 5 mangos' that day he would made on $50 backs. Now take into consideration market fees, sugar, salt, washing soap, kerosine, and some more required need for a rural dweller. Do we really believe that $10.00 is a rip off?

  • Raf Inha I think might be at the time that's the only person who sell mango at the main market. If it is true den that person can act like monopoly or he or she can be the price maker of his or her own product (mango). Thus we cannot say anything, but we hav to go for the sellers price if we want to buy the mango, if not thn find another substitute products... Simply the choice is yours (consumers)!......

  • Andy Charteris Put it simply, its all about supply and demand. Perhaps there is a high demand for mangoes at the moment.
Otherwise, if the cost price is too high, very few people will buy the goods. The sellers hopefully will adjust their prices accordingly - it makes business sense (all about maximising profit).

  • Kim Litera They bring less fruits for less pay for truck hire then they made this silly price. this is so unacceptable.. people need fruits to stay healthy but becoz of the price today, consumers just hang around the market with an empty plastic bag.
  • Kim Litera Sometimes I dont get the point, In Asia where people are over crowded and lots of populations whom the greens and fruits are so very cheap. in terms of farms and lands, Solomon have very much good lands for farming...somehow if wil backfires again to the issue of education, need more training and more info to these people for them to understand certain things.

  • Washa Au it depends if the mango and banana are sold by the black market people then that is where we will find the higher the price
  • Terry Brown There is price-gouging all along: truck fares, middlemen, market fees, all of which contribute to inflation and prices that people cannot afford. It would help if decentralized markets could be developed, for example, at White River or Ranadi, rather then forcing everyone to come into the centre of Honiara. Again, no vision for the city of Honiara, just let money rule.

  • Jones Justus Otafalu JC, the idea of opportunity cost is all about making best choice from alternatives, in this case, she has been engaging in other things during the period the mango naturally got flowers and up until the fruit is ready to be used, some one climbs the mango tree and harvested the fruit stored it to ripe and sell at the market, the whole of the process she doesn't need much choice or decision to be made except for the marketing days she spent selling her mango she have to forgone other actives and that is the cost she involved, to compare or give example for melon relates to opportunity cost is quiet interesting, Melon needs more human labor and time to fullfill this actives; brush and clean the bush, mounting, planting, weddings, harvesting, and selling, therefore if the price of the melon is quiet high its reasonable becos along the period of time she spent more time on melon than other activities, to dress inflation/higher price, those concern should look at the causes of inflation and try make or adjust policies that will help reduce inflation

  • Sione Tuhaika I agree Jones. By the way, government policies do play a huge role in inflation in the country.
  • Valeriano Kwany Nowadays no such thing is free, if you see those mothers selling mangoes they have to spend bout $50 or $100 for the climbers and truck fare for a tray to transport that mangoes to the market is about $80 to $100 so you can calculate your cost against the price so at the end of the day the poor mother just end $60 to $150 a day if that day is a lucky day..... thats the reality
